Visit the Royal Waiting Room
Average 1 hour/maximum 20 persons per guide
The waiting room offers you a unique look at the Royal Family’s travelling history. This gem was closed to the public for a long time but is now open again following major renovations. It’s a fantastic tour combined with coffee and pastries, lunch or dinner at 1e Klas.
Amsterdam’s Central Station was designed in 1881 by architect P. J. H. Cuypers in a historic style; a mix of Gothic and Renaissance. It’s a style that’s also clear in the building he’d designed five years previously: Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.
The city’s residents nicknamed the station the ‘Cathedral’. Cuypers’ design was meticulous down to the finest details, from the sleek design of the furniture in the salon of the Royal Waiting Room to the ornate wall decorations and floral motifs throughout the station building. These touches make it clear that for Cuypers, architecture was both the pinnacle and the sum of all the arts.
